Channel letters are the individually fabricated 3D letters seen on most storefronts and mall facades, and the category covers more variation, and more cost factors, than the finished sign lets on.
Types of channel letters
- Front-lit: light shines through the letter face for a bright, even glow.
- Back-lit or halo-lit: the face stays dark while light glows around the letter from behind.
- Combination-lit: both front and halo lighting on the same letter.
- Non-illuminated: fabricated but not lit, for daytime-only visibility.
Construction
Aluminium returns form the letter body, an acrylic face is fitted on the front, and LED modules are wired inside, all sealed against dust and moisture for outdoor use.
What drives the cost
Letter height and depth, number of letters, illumination type, face acrylic grade, and installation complexity, including height and access equipment needed, all factor in, which is why two signs with the same letter count can price very differently.
Typeface and legibility
Simpler, bolder typefaces fabricate more reliably and read more clearly at a distance than fine script or thin serif fonts, an important consideration when a logo's primary typeface doesn't translate well to a 3D channel letter build.
