Paid social advertising is the lever that turns a good piece of content into a guaranteed number of people seeing it, rather than hoping the algorithm shows it to enough of the right audience organically. Meta Ads (Instagram and Facebook) and TikTok Ads remain the two most relevant platforms for the UAE and Qatar market, and each is built differently.
Campaign objectives: matching the goal to the platform setting
Both platforms ask for a campaign objective before anything else, awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, or sales, and this setting changes who the algorithm shows the ad to, not just what button appears on it. A campaign built for awareness optimises for the cheapest reach, while a campaign built for leads or sales optimises for people statistically more likely to take that specific action, even at a higher cost per impression.
Targeting: location, interest and lookalike audiences
Location targeting down to a specific city, or a radius around a physical store, is the starting point for most UAE and Qatar campaigns. Interest and behaviour targeting narrows further to people likely to be relevant to the product. Lookalike audiences, built from an existing customer list or past website visitors, let the platform find new people who resemble a business's actual customers, generally a stronger performer than interest targeting alone once enough customer data exists to build one.
Budgeting and the learning phase
Both Meta and TikTok's ad systems go through a learning phase after a campcampaign launches or its budget changes significantly, where the algorithm is still figuring out who responds best, and performance during this window is typically less efficient than once it stabilises. Making frequent small budget or targeting changes resets this learning repeatedly, which is a common reason a campaign never seems to find its footing.
Common paid social mistakes
- Judging a campaign's performance in the first 48 hours, before the learning phase has settled.
- Targeting too narrow an audience, which starves the algorithm of enough data to optimise effectively.
- Running the same creative for weeks without refreshing it, leading to ad fatigue and rising costs.
- Sending paid traffic to a slow-loading or generic page instead of one built for that specific offer.
